Speculative Futures
with artist Sylvia Nickerson
Thursday, October 29
5:30pm - 6:30pm
Westdale Branch
Westdale - Program RoomA hands-on artist workshop to explore speculative fiction by imagining possible futures and creating objects inspired by their ideas.
What might the future look like? What might we carry with us into it? In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore speculative fiction by imagining possible futures and creating objects inspired by their ideas. Bring a speculation—a question, hypothesis, or idea about what the future might hold—and using colourful paper, a paper shredder, glue, tape, and paper and pre-made papier-mâché forms, transform your idea into a unique futuristic object. Participants will take their creations home at the end of the workshop.
Throughout the making process, artist Sylvia Nickerson will share the inspiration behind the life-size flecked figures in her work Dark Mirrors, currently on display at HPL’s Westdale branch. She will also discuss how these figures became a starting point for imagining her speculative-fiction graphic novel, Dark Mirrors.
Come ready to imagine, make, and speculate about the future!
Westdale Branch
The Westdale Branch was originally known as the Western Branch. The Branch opened in June 1957 and was renovated and expanded in 1998. The name was officially changed to Westdale in 1969. The Branch offers materials and programming for children, teens and adults.
The Westdale Branch also has the The Seed Library. The Seed Library is provided in partnership with the Hamilton Seed Library. Its lending process is very simple: visit the branch, pick the seeds that you would like to take and fill out the log sheet. There are no limits to how much you can take, all that is requested is that everyone respect that this is a community resource and that they only take a reasonable amount.
